In today’s rapidly evolving world, international education plays a vital role in shaping adaptable, forward-thinking leaders. Stefanie Komar, an ISS International School alumna, exemplifies how a diverse and inclusive education empowers one to confidently embrace change, take bold risks, and pursue global careers.
Graduating from ISS in 1991, Stefanie’s career journey has been diverse, spanning multiple industries and continents. Inspired by Mrs Rabley’s engaging science lessons, she initially pursued Biology as an undergraduate. However, she quickly realised that spending her days peering into a microscope was not her calling. Without hesitation, she transitioned to Nutrition & Dietetics, a choice that ultimately opened doors to a variety of commercial and corporate opportunities.
Stefanie’s career path is marked by strategic transitions and rapid growth. Her first major role was in sales and marketing at Abbott Pharmaceuticals. Though not a perfect fit, she recognised its value as a stepping stone into the corporate world. A few years later, she transitioned to Shell, where she thrived in global roles and honed her skills in corporate communications and public relations. Today, she is a Communications Director at Cargill, a global powerhouse in the agriculture and food industry.
Reflecting on her time at ISS, Stefanie acknowledges the school’s role in shaping her cultural awareness and adaptability. These qualities have been instrumental in her international career. “ISS gave me the invaluable gift of intrinsic cultural awareness and appreciation. This has shaped me as a person and helped me in my professional journey, especially in my global roles,” she said.
Founded in 1981, ISS International School has been committed to creating a nurturing environment where students from diverse backgrounds can excel. The school demonstrates that inclusivity and academic excellence go hand in hand. Despite its non-selective admissions, ISS students consistently achieve strong results in international examinations. The school’s philosophy of “Educating To Make A Difference” is evident in its emphasis on student wellness, global perspectives, and holistic learning.
Stefanie considers her years at ISS among the best of her life. She fondly recalls school dances, weekend outings, and the friendships that have stood the test of time. Teachers like Mrs. Rabley (Science), Mrs. Head (Math), and Mrs. Millichamp (French) left a lasting impact, instilling not only knowledge but also a love for learning and resilience in the face of challenges.
Her advice to current ISS students is to embrace the journey. “It’s perfectly fine if you haven’t figured it all out yet. Life is a journey,” she says. “Make decisions based on what you know right now and don’t be afraid to change course. Trust your instincts, seize every opportunity, and when things do not go according to plan, be resilient. Pivot and adapt for the better.”
