Graduating in 2023 as a high honour roll student, Clara Hong reflects on her transformative academic journey at ISS International School, where she pursued the IB Diploma. Now a student at King’s College London (KCL), she recalls her initial introverted self, “When I first came to ISS, I was a little reserved.” However, ISS’s nurturing and inclusive environment became the bedrock of her growth. Clara emphasises, “The teachers at ISS gave me more than an education. From preparing revision schedules to helping with administrative matters, they always made sure that each and every student was cared for, limiting stress to a healthy level,  just enough for us to focus and excel.”

Within this caring atmosphere, Clara discovered her voice, notably through participation in Model United Nations, which served as a life-changing catalyst. She says, “MUN was a great opportunity for my peers and I to learn leadership skills. It was through these simulations that I discovered my knack for debating.” This experience transformed her once timid self into the confident and outspoken individual she is today.

Mrs. Mueller, her geography teacher at ISS, was instrumental in Clara’s journey. Clara says, “Mrs. Mueller used her work experience at Wall Street and various NGOs to educate us on geopolitical and geoeconomic concepts. The way she integrated those real-life experiences into our daily lessons inspired me to find meaningful ways to pass on what I’ve learnt to others.” Encouraged by Mrs. Mueller’s approach, Clara found an interest in consulting, prompting her to actively engage in networking and attend various panel events at KCL.

Clara recently organised a careers workshop, inviting seasoned professionals from elite London firms to share insights on the summer internship application process. This experience proved invaluable as she was contemplating a switch of course. Unlike many who might be content with placement in a prestigious university, Clara isn’t afraid to follow her own goals and make choices that are important to her personal growth. Expressing her gratitude, Clara extends special thanks to Ms. Sarah Jeyaram, her university advisor at ISS, “I am truly grateful for our university advisor, Ms. J. Even after leaving ISS. Her guidance continues to make me feel supported.”

Offering advice to current grade 11s and 12s, Clara says, “While I understand the significance and appeal of aspiring for top universities, it’s crucial that the course you intend to pursue resonates with who you are. Avoid comparing yourself to others; instead, measure your progress against your past achievements and take a moment to visualise your future self. Stay true to yourself and your passions in life.”
